Summer Bus TransportationBus Transportation - SummerWe have a limited-stop activity bus providing transportation to and from the Orono School’s main campus. • Bus transportation is available Monday through Thursday, June 15 - August 6. • Transportation is available from designated stops to the main campus for programs beginning at 9 am. • Transportation is available from the main campus back to designated stops for programs ending at 12 pm and 4 pm • Students who are registered for the Summer Playground Program (Rainbow or Holbrook Park) may ride the bus for free from the main campus. • DEADLINE TO REGISTER FOR BUS TRANSPORTATION: MAY 18 • Exact bus routes and times will be email the week of June 9th to those who are registered. Summer ExplorersSummer FunJoin us for an exciting adventure filled with fun, hands-on activities. Each day features a new theme, with activities organized into 30-minute stations to keep kids engaged and learning. Campers will explore a variety of topics through interactive and creative activities designed to spark curiosity and build new skills. With a different theme each day, every camper will have a unique and memorable experience! This camp is the perfect complement to swimming lessons that occur during the 9 AM - 12 PM camp time. Swim Lessons: Level 1AquaticsIntroduction to Water Skills MUST BE AT LEAST 5 YEARS OLD. Tentative in and around water, uncomfortable submerging head and not yet floating independently. Course Content: Learn to Swim, Level 1helps participants feel comfortable in the water. Skills covered include: bobbing, retrieving objects underwater, front and back glides, back float, tread water using arms and hands, combined arm and leg actions on front and back, and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Enter independently, using either the ladder, steps or side Travel at least 5 yards, bob 5 times then safely exit the water. (Participants can walk, move along the gutter or "swim.") Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 5 seconds and recover to a vertical position. (This part of the assessment can be performed with support.) Curriculum and levels are based on the Red Cross' Learn-to-Swim Program. Swim Lessons: Level 2AquaticsFundamental Aquatics Skills MUST BE AT LEAST 5 YEARS OLD. Comfortable in water, submerges head and floats independently. Course Content: This level allows students to succeed in the fundamentals of aquatic skills. These skills include: front, jellyfish and tuck floats, roll from front to back and back to front, change direction of travel while swimming on front or back, treading of water, combined arm and leg actions on front and back (working towards moving independently) and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Step from side into chest-deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll to back, float for 5 seconds then return to vertical position. Move into a back float for 5 seconds, roll to front then recover to a vertical position. Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to the front then continue swimming for 5 body lengths. Curriculum and levels are based on the Red Cross' Learn-to-Swim Program. Swim Lessons: Level 3AquaticsStroke Development Comfortable in deep water (5ft+), swims at least 5 yards on front with a coordinated stroke independently, swims at least 5 yards on back with a coordinated stroke independently. Course Content: Builds on fundamental skills with practice and distance and introduces skills used in deeper water. Skills include: headfirst entries from side in sitting and kneeling positions, bobbing while moving toward safety, rotary breathing, survival float, flutter, dolphin and scissors kick, front crawl, elementary backstroke, and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Jump into deep water from the side, tread or float for 1 minute then proceed to an exit point by swimming the front crawl and/or elementary backstroke for 15 yards. Push off in a streamline position then swim front crawl for 15 yards, change position and direction as necessary, then swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards before exiting the water. Skills include: headfirst entries from side in compact and stride positions, swim under water, feet first surface dive, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly, flutter and dolphin kicks on back and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Perform a feet first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim back crawl for 15 yards. Curriculum and levels are based on the Red Cross' Learn-to-Swim Program. Swim Lessons: Level 5/6AquaticsStroke Refinement & Advanced Options Comfortable in deep water, swims at least 25 yards coordinated: front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly. Course Content: Develops confidence and improves on Level 4 skills with an emphasis on distance, time and safety. Skills include:diving, treading (5 mins) and sculling, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly, open and flip turns. Exit Skills: Perform a shallow-angle dive in deep water, swim 50 yards, front crawl, and then elementary backstroke for 50 yards with efficient turning styles. Breastroke for 25 yards, change direction, back crawl 25 yards, use turn styles. Submerge 3 - 5 body lengths underwater, return to surface and exit water.
