Swim Lessons: Level 5/6

Stroke Refinement & Advanced Options

Comfortable in deep water, swims at least 25 yards coordinated: front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly.

Course Content: Develops confidence and improves on Level 4 skills with an emphasis on distance, time and safety. Skills include:diving, treading (5 mins) and sculling, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly, open and flip turns.

Exit Skills:

• Perform a shallow-angle dive in deep water, swim 50 yards, front crawl, and then elementary backstroke for 50 yards with efficient turning styles.
• Breastroke for 25 yards, change direction, back crawl 25 yards, use turn styles.
• Submerge 3 - 5 body lengths underwater, return to surface and exit water.

Curriculum and levels are based on the Red Cross' Learn-to-Swim Program. For questions about what level your child should register for, refer to our descriptions.

If you are a new family to Orono Community Education’s swimming lessons, we encourage you to schedule a swimming pre-assessment to determine the best level for your swimmer. Pre-assessments take place at the Orono pool. Instructors will guide your swimmer through a set of skills in a 15-minute period.
