Swim Lessons: Level 1AquaticsIntroduction to Water Skills MUST BE AT LEAST 5 YEARS OLD. Tentative in and around water, uncomfortable submerging head and not yet floating independently. Course Content: Learn to Swim, Level 1helps participants feel comfortable in the water. Skills covered include: bobbing, retrieving objects underwater, front and back glides, back float, tread water using arms and hands, combined arm and leg actions on front and back, and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Enter independently, using either the ladder, steps or side Travel at least 5 yards, bob 5 times then safely exit the water. (Participants can walk, move along the gutter or "swim.") Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 5 seconds and recover to a vertical position. (This part of the assessment can be performed with support.) Swim Lessons: Level 2AquaticsFundamental Aquatics Skills MUST BE AT LEAST 5 YEARS OLD. Comfortable in water, submerges head and floats independently. Course Content: This level allows students to succeed in the fundamentals of aquatic skills. These skills include: front, jellyfish and tuck floats, roll from front to back and back to front, change direction of travel while swimming on front or back, treading of water, combined arm and leg actions on front and back (working towards moving independently) and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Step from side into chest-deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll to back, float for 5 seconds then return to vertical position. Move into a back float for 5 seconds, roll to front then recover to a vertical position. Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to the front then continue swimming for 5 body lengths. Course Content: Builds on fundamental skills with practice and distance and introduces skills used in deeper water. Skills include: headfirst entries from side in sitting and kneeling positions, bobbing while moving toward safety, rotary breathing, survival float, flutter, dolphin and scissors kick, front crawl, elementary backstroke, and age-appropriate water safety topics. Exit Skills: Jump into deep water from the side, tread or float for 1 minute then proceed to an exit point by swimming the front crawl and/or elementary backstroke for 15 yards. Push off in a streamline position then swim front crawl for 15 yards, change position and direction as necessary, then swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards before exiting the water. Exit Skills: Perform a shallow-angle dive in deep water, swim 50 yards, front crawl, and then elementary backstroke for 50 yards with efficient turning styles. Breastroke for 25 yards, change direction, back crawl 25 yards, use turn styles. Submerge 3 - 5 body lengths underwater, return to surface and exit water. For inexperienced or cautious preschool swimmers. Course Content: The primary objective of this course is to orient children to the aquatic environment while helping to gain basic aquatic skills. Skills for this level may include: entering and exiting water using ramps, steps or side of pool, blowing bubbles in water, submerging mouth, nose and eyes, retrieving object under water, glides, floats, arm/leg and tredding actions, combining these movements on front and back. Exit Skills: Enter the water independently, travel for 5 yards (walking, "swimming" or moving along gutter), submerge mouth and blow bubbles (3 sec), and safely exit the water. While in shallow water, glide on front for 2 body lengths, roll to back and float for 3 seconds, then recover to a vertical position. Taking the "Doh!" Out of SourdoughCookingHave you always wanted to try making sourdough but felt overwhelmed? This fun, hands-on workshop takes the mystery out of the sourdough process and shows you how to bake amazing bread with a simple, real-life method. Mix your own dough, learn how to care for a starter, and go home with: one loaf of dough to bake the next day, your own starter, and clear, step-by-step instructions to keep baking at home. What to bring: Large mixing bowl Tea towel/kitchen towel Spatula or dough scraper Kitchen scale (if you have one) Note: For best results, sourdough is typically baked in a Dutch oven. The instructor will share alternative baking options during the workshop, but if you’ve been thinking about getting (or borrowing) one, now’s a great time! A minimum 4–5 qt size is ideal.
